This is an optional activity.

After completing the Units in this Module, you should try to:

  1. If possible, identify a patient who is to have a radical nephrectomy and follow their pathway from referral to hospital, to admission for surgery, to discharge.
  2. Attend the multidisciplinary team meeting to experience the pathway to determination of specific operation to be performed.
  3. Attend the operating theatre to observe the operation. This will develop your understanding of how other organs may be affected/injured during the surgery.
  4. Find out where the nearest specialist cancer centre is for your region.
  5. Try to find out how many radical nephrectomies are performed in either your hospital/your specialist cancer centre annually.
  6. List the possible complications associated with renal cancer surgery.
